Gandhi Nagar Hospital holds Cervical, breast screening camp

JAMMU: A Cervical Cancer & Breast Cancer Screening camp was organized today here at Government Hospital Gandhi Nagar to mark International Women Day.

The camp was organized by NCD Cell, Jammu under the guidance of Director Health services, Jammu. The Camp was inaugurated by Medical Superintendent Dr. Narinder Bhutyal & Divisional Nodal Officer (NCD CELL, DHS Jammu) Dr. Vijay Kumar Sharma.

Around 20 female patients were screened in the camp, 5 were found positive & the cases will further be managed for precancerous conditions at Govt. Hospital Gandhi Nagar, Jammu.

Training & Screening were taken up by Dr. Samita Bhat (Gynae. Cancer Surgeon, Gandhi Nagar Hospital, Jammu).

Cervical Cancer is the second most common cancer in India after Breast Cancer. The current estimates indicate 67500 deaths annually in India which accounts for 1/5th of global deaths from cervical cancer.

The common signs & symptoms usually ignored by the women are bleeding between periods, menstrual periods longer, post menopausal bleeding etc as most of the cases detected are in the 3rd & 4th stage of the disease.

Such camps are organized to screen the patients in early Precancerous condition, so that the morbidity & mortality due to these cancers can be prevented. The screening test involved VIA (Visual Inspection with acetic acid. The VIA positive cases are further managed at Govt. Hospital Gandhi Nagar, Jammu.

This camp was specially organized to mark the International Women’s Day to make awareness among the females who due to their hesitation don’t express their health condition for the common symptoms of precancerous condition & approach the health institution in the later stages of the disease.
