Abhishek Kapoor on not casting a transgender person in Chandigarh Kare Aashiqui: ‘Why is everything legitimised by an actor.

For anyone who grew up in the northern part of India in the last couple of decades, the words Chandigarh Kare Aashiqui takes them back to a regular Punjabi wedding. The song, which is still played with fervour, became the title to the latest Ayushmann Khurrana film and with the trailer, the audience was left intrigued. 

While it appeared to be a glossy rom-com with Ayushmann Khurrana and Vaani Kapoor in the lead roles, it had a stronger subject at its core. Talking to indianexpress.com, the film’s director Abhishek Kapoor explained the team’s decision to hint at the film’s subject in the trailer, their casting choices, and the responsibility that he feels while telling the story of a transgender person.
