JAMMU: To underline the importance of Media in unearthing social evils in society, Anand Jain, IPS, Director, Anti-Corruption Bureau, Jammu and Kashmir, delivered the keynote lecture to the students of the new Department of Journalism and Media Studies, University of Jammu.
While speaking on the topic, “Role of Media and issue of Social Corruption,” Shri Jain emphasized the importance of the media’s ability to change perceptions, norms, and behaviour which is at the core of their relevance for the fight against corruption. Social Media also provides a public forum for citizens to voice their opinions on and experiences with corruption, said Jain.
Jain exhorted that Departmental Vigilance Officers have become an important interface between organizations and Anti-Corruption Bureau which has led to transparency in the latter’s functioning. While quoting real-time experiences, Jain said that the civil society has, over the period, evolved and with the intervention of technology, Anti-Corruption Bureau has made a user-friendly website, whereat one can file a complaint online and can see the status of his complaint(s) online. He further mentioned that ACB is planning to introduce many more measures to make the system more transparent and vibrant.
Prof Manoj Kumar Dhar, Vice-Chancellor, University of Jammu in his presidential address complimented the Director, Anti Corruption Bureau for his exposition of the topic and how he was able to emphasize the role of media which is proactively functioning to eradicate social evils in the society.
Prof Dhar said that the students and the faculty must have definitely got benefitted from the lecture which in his opinion represented a wonderful mix of various components of corruption and technological interventions. Vice-Chancellor further said that the real-time examples and experiences of Jain followed by a question and answer session made today’s session very interactive and fruitful.
Prof Dhar complimented Prof Shyam Narayan Lal, Head, Department of Journalism and Media Studies and Dr Vinay Thusoo, Coordinator, Journalism and Media studies for bringing the best of the experts in their respective areas ever since the inception of the Department.
He further reiterated that the new Department has come up to meet the long-cherished demand of the youth of Jammu and civil society and thus there are enormous expectations from the department. Prof Dhar said that the way department is providing exposure to the students to the best of the experts in varied fields and I am sure that the students will benefit from their experiences and try to inculcate the best of the practices of the industry.
Earlier, Prof Shyam Narayan Lal, Head, Department of Journalism and Media Studies in his welcome address reiterated his commitment to making the department the best in the Country and further thanked Vice-Chancellor for his endurance and consistent efforts to make this department a reality which has become functional because of his timely guidance and support. Dr Vinay Thusoo, Coordinator, Department of Journalism and Media Studies and Departmental Vigilance Officer delivered a vote of thanks and introduced the keynote speaker to the audience.
Among others, Prof Kulwant Singh, former Dean and Head, Department of Law, Dr Imran Farooq, PRO to Vice-Chancellor, Dr Neeraj Sharma and Dr Chering Tandup, Bhaderwah Campus, faculty members from various departments, students and staff were also present on the occasion.
