Kathua Campus JU organizes ‘IPR Awareness Programme

KATHUA: Department of Computer Science & IT, Kathua Campus (JU) and Institution Innovation Council (IIC), University of Jammu in association with Office of the Controller General of Patents, Designs & Trademarks, Department for Promotion of Industry & Internal Trade, Ministry of Commerce & Industry, Government of India organized an informative webinar titled “IPR Awareness Programme” for the faculty members and students under National Intellectual Property Awareness Mission (NIPAM).

Dr. D Usha Rao, Assistant Controller of Patents and Designs, Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Government of India, New Delhi was the resource person. The webinar was attended by 170 participants across the nation along with a few international attendees.

Dr. Rao highlighted the importance of Intellectual Property as the foundation of creativity, innovation and research. She diversely interpreted IPRs including patents, copyrights, trademarks, industrial designs, and geographical indications and gave insights on various aspects of registering them. She mentioned endless examples of patents that are currently being used in different sectors right from agriculture to the high-end industries.

Briefing about the nuances of IP laws applicable in India, she emphasized upon the advantages of protecting IPRs. She concluded by suggesting the participants to take maximum benefit of the Intellectual Property Rights.

The programme was organized under the supervision of Dr. Meenakshi Kilam, Rector, Kathua Campus, University of Jammu. Dr. Kilam expressed the requirement of organizing this webinar that not only brings familiarity to the students but also provides detailed knowledge about the importance of Intellectual Property Rights (IPR).

Further, she acknowledged the indispensable role of IPR in magnifying the socio-economic expansion of the nation and thereby, contributes to the campaign of Atmanirbhar Bharat. She envisioned this event as a step along with the Government of India in delivering specific attention on StartUps. She claimed that it is now for the youth to take a leap towards working hard, not to become an employee but an employer.    

Professor Susheel Sharma, President, Institution Innovation Council (IIC), University of Jammu said the awareness pertaining to IPR is essential for the students and inspired them to show more participation in such informative webinars. He further said the students need to be aware of the creation and preservation of their ideas.

Dr. Sourabh Shastri, Coordinator of the webinar and Incharge Head, MCA Department, Kathua Campus thanked the resource person for sparing her time to indulge in the fruitful interaction with the students and directs that Intellectual Property is vital for safeguarding the useful creations.
